Algae for Biodiesel May Be In the Future

Exxon invests in algae for biodieselJuly 16, 2009 10:10 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)PMG – Isman (300).jpgBarb Isman, chief operating officer for Canadian Bioenergy Corporation, spoke at PMG’s AgProgress Conference in Kananaskis, Alta., in July. (For my complete coverage of the conference, click here.) Isman presented an update on biodiesel production in Canada, noting that her company is working with ADM to built a 265-million-litre biodiesel production facility on site at ADM’s canola crush plant in Lloydminster, Alta. With mandates coming on stream in B.C. and Alberta in 2010 and Canada as a whole in 2011, Canada will need 700 million litres of biodiesel just to meet these mandates, she said. Current capacity, spread over a number of smaller plants, is 220 million litres or so.In her talk, Isman talked about second and third generation source materials for biodiesel. Canola is a first generation material. Algae, which contains 46 per cent oil and doesn’t tie up farmland, is a second or third generation source, she says. She also noted that large petroleum companies are getting involved in these later generation products, and they’re also working on more efficient methods to convert the oil into useable energy. As if on queue, that day Exxon Mobil announced it will invest US$600 million in a project to develop production and harvest techniques for high-oil algae. The research partner is Synthetic Genomics. In a Dow Jones Newswire article, which appeared in The Globe and Mail, Emil Jacobs, VP of research and development for Exxon Research, is quoted saying the company looked “at all fuel options” and algae made the cut.The article says, “Commercially-viable algae biofuel is definitely in the realm of the future. Algae is rich in fat, which can be processed into fuel, and can reproduce much faster than corn and other land-hungry agricultural crops, all while living in brackish water.”It will be many years, if ever, before algae goes commercial — so canola biodiesel will remain a strong market outlook for Canadian canola growers for a good while yet.

Returning Veterans Can Go To Truck Driving School

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

An article today on The Bulletin was discussing an issue that is beginning to get more and more coverage in the news. According to the article, as many veterans come back after their military deployment to Iraq, they are finding that even truck driving jobs are few and far between.

The article speaks of the job hunting experiences of Oregon Army National Guard Spc. Karly Cooper. Cooper has had a very tough time finding work. In total Cooper says she has applied for almost 90 jobs and still can not find work.

This quote seems to sum up her frustrations:

“We’re everyday people, too — we need a house, a roof over our head,” Cooper said. “We go and fight for our country and we come back and the people that we’re defending, basically it feels like they’re not helping us.”

Cooper is certainly not alone when it comes to the job hunt. According to the article the economy seems to be much to blame for this shortage of jobs. A few years ago veterans were able to find jobs in aviation and construction. Now those fields have hiring freezes or have laid workers off. Veterans are in a tough situation especially with the economy in its current condition.

CR England however, may be able to help some veterans by providing them with a new career through one of our truck driving schools . We have many trucking positions open for experienced drivers as well. CR England offers great mileage pay and can provide excellent CDL training for those that do not have a commercial drivers license.

New Truck Driving Jobs Blog

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

We have decided to split up some of our blog content into a truck driving school blog and a truck driving jobs blog. We found that we need to post more stories and news information about trucking in general, but that not every story is really relevant to the people that are not driving yet.

For example an article about adjusting reefer settings may not mean much to someone who doesn’t know exactly what we are referring to when we say “reefer” when it comes to the business of trucking. So here is a link to the new truck jobs blog.

Click here to visit the truck driving jobs blog for everything from news to dedicated route job openings at CR England. We think the split will keep the content more focused to our readers. All major news will posted on both sites so that know one misses the really big news.

Here are some highlights of the content we will be posting on the new CDL jobs blog are:

  1. Truck maintenance information
  2. Review gadgets for the truck driver
  3. New tractor reviews
  4. Chrome and custom truck stuff
  5. Safety information
  6. Job Postings

We think the new site will be a great resource for those in the business already and can serve as an information outlet for drivers on the road.

White Collar Truck Driving Jobs Are The Future

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I was reading a great story on Cleveland.com and I came across a great discussion about the current economic climate that shared a few stories about former white collar business people who have gone to truck driving schools across the country.

The article had a story of a man who was formerly employed by Bear Sterns. He was laid off shortly after the investment bank failed. Instead of finding another office job he decided to go to truck driving school and pursue truck driving jobs as a new career. The Associated Press article that ran today said that the man decided to get training after sending out more than 35 resumes and didn’t have any employment opportunities pan out.

There is no doubt the economy has beat down a little and trucking is no exception, but the jobs truck drivers do are always in high demand. Many polls often show that truck jobs are hard positions to fill. This can make the trucking industry an easy choice for many who have lost their jobs from layoffs and cost cutting initiatives.

The article also discussed a gentleman named Allan Cohen who after loosing his job as a publisher decided to choose truck driving as his next career. Cohen says he chose trucking because he believes the trucking industry is recession-proof. Cohen also believes that for him, driving will be therapeutic.

Whether your white collar or blue CR England may have the truck driving jobs that you may be looking for.

Stimulus For Truck Driving Schools

Friday, July 10th, 2009

The Philadelphia Business Journal ran an article about economic stimulus going towards truck driving school training. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has sent $21.5 million combined to work force investment boards in just five of Pennsylvania’s counties. According to the article the counties are already spending the stimulus money.

The stimulus act that was signed into law in February was established to help disadvantaged youth, adults and was also to be used for workers that have been uprooted. CDL driver jobs are certainly in demand any time the economy starts to expand. Now is a great time to get that kind of training.

To figure out if stimulus money is available to you we recommend you contact your local work force services location to see if they have what your looking for. They usually have all the programs down pat when comes to state and federal funding for trade programs like truck driving schools.

CR England truck driving schools offer excellent training and financing is always available. We provide transportation to our facilities and also provide dormitory housing or hotel stays at no additional charge to our training program. For trucking schools information visit http://www.GoToTruckDrivingSchool.com

If it turns out you need to attend a local school  in order to qualify for stimulus funding CR England is always advertising truck driving jobs and always consider an application for employment.
