Business & Safety Advice From A Truck Driver

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Michael Youmans is a driver that knows how to work.  Now a proud truck owner, he knows the ins and outs of the trucking business.  At 61 years old he has been with CR England for almost two years.  As a driver he feels that speed is the most important factor in driving.  He says that people can’t assume that drivers have “magic airbreaks”  and that they can stop when ever they want.  All drivers on the road need to realize that trucks don’t stop as fast as other vehicles.  At the same time he cautions other truck drivers to slow down.  He says that is the most important advice to remember.  When you are driving too fast, speed becomes your worst enemy.  Each driver needs to adjust their speed for their specific conditions and skill level. Proper training always starts in truck driving school.

He also stresses getting enough sleep while on the road.  He advises that any amount of fatigue can have an effect on your reaction time.  Not only does he give great advice but he also sets an example of what a responsible driver should do.  Michael wakes up around two or three in the morning and stays alert and ready while driving throughout the day.  He works hard everyday he is at work so that he can relax on his time off knowing that he did his best.  Along with his latest accomplishment of purchasing his truck he is also looking forward to the birth of his first grandchild.  When he is home in Tampa, Florida he loves to ride his motorcycle.  He owns a Yamaha Stratoliner and lives for the freedom and exhilaration that he gets when he rides it.

He says he cant live with out his GPS, refrigerator, or microwave.  They are his must-have appliances.  When asked about how he achieved his success he said that he just floated along, he ran a lot of payments and always kept his balance current.  Just another story to show that success in reach for anyone that is willing to work hard.

Get Retrained Not Re-Layed Off at Truck Driving School

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Curious About Truck Driving School?WTOV9.com ran an article that talked about local steelworkers form Yorkville that had been laid off. The article noted that some people were looking to make truck driving their new career. This bit here is aimed at anyone who is laid off and considering CDL careers.

In this economy it’s a great idea! Trucking companies are always looking for truck drivers. Some companies may only be able to hire drivers with experience and others may tie training and hiring into one process. Bottom line is there are jobs to be had in the industry even while things are slow. Even better news is that as things recover, usually the trucking industry is ahead of the back.

When you choose to train with trucking companies that train you, you won’t have to go looking for a job when the training is over. On the other hand, when you chose to get your training from a training only business or trade school you may not find that jobs are easy to get.

Remember those trucking companies that only hire drivers with 1 year of experience, you won’t be eligible to work for them. Almost all major carriers due to liability issues will want you to get retrained before they give you the keys to 100k worth of equipment. That means the number of possible employers will be slim or you will have to pay to get retrained. All this added headache because the training only business or trade schools are really just selling you the training.

One caveat to this is a training school that has an agreement with an employer. They do exist, but may be few and far between. They are certainly OK. If your not getting training with a major carrier make sure you ask about the job prospects before you pay.

We hope this brief write up can help you see the differences between CDL training types. And finally here is a word of advice on this issue. If you don’t go to one of our Premier Truck Driving Schools that’s fine, our program may not fit your situation. Just make sure you get training from a place that already has a job lined up for you otherwise you will driving away from CDL Careers instead of getting closer to one!

How to Find Terrible Truck Driving Schools

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

You’ll find many articles on the internet and in magazines that talk about easy ways to find truck driving schools. This article provides a list of tips you should avoid and if followed they will certainly set you up for failure. We have collected these tips from various resources like the internet, commercials, and print advertisements.

We hope to show these tips in a humorous light, but finding quality CDL training is serious business so think about these before you make a decision.

Tips that will leave you broke:

  1. Start with truck driving schools that don’t disclose how much the training is going to cost.
    1. Can’t believe it can happen, plenty of stories circulate the internet about truck driving schools that get students to sign paper work before they know what they are really getting.
  2. Go with a school that negotiates the cost of tuition.
    1. If you feel like you’re getting the used car salesman pitch, just remember you are from any school that offers to charge each student a different amount.

Tips that will leave you unemployed:

  1. Get your training from a truck school that has old broken down equipment.
    1. Learning on outdated equipment or learning on uncommon equipment will set you up for failure. Very few fleet tractors are old.
  2. Choose a school that will only train students to drive automatic transmissions.
    1. Learning on equipment that is sub standard will just leave you looking for more training. Very few fleet tractors have automatic transmissions.
  3. Get training from a school that doesn’t offer a placement or job guarantee.
    1. Remember that once you have a license, you’re going to need a job. Learning from the local mom and pop trucking school might lead you right back to the unemployment lines. The catch is this time you’ll have even less money.

These tips are based on some the most common pitfalls that many truck driving school students find themselves falling victim to. If you were to avoid these common areas and consider them before you make your final decision you’ll be better off in the long run.  If you’re looking to make truck driving your new career follow this blog for more information or visit www.CREngland.com for more CDL training information.
