Trucking Industry Wants Drivers

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Portland News had an article about the income that can be made through driving a truck and quoting $40,000 yearly right off the bat.  With the diverse workforce looking for jobs, changing careers is an option for many people.

Take Kelly Lovering (age 27) of Portsmouth, OR.  She was quoted as saying, “I used to work for the Department of Corrections. I got laid-off in January, so I searched for six months to find a job and couldn’t find anything. So, I was like, ‘Well, I’ll do something different.’ So, I decided to come take lessons and learn to drive a truck,” she said.  At the time of the article, Kelly was half way through her course.  With truck driving almost recession-proof, she felt she had a lot to look forward to.

The article grabbed my attention because it brings up the matter of people being aware of opportunity in the trucking field.  Not everyone realizes that with a few months of classes, a career is created in a recession proof field.  Trucking is part of transportation, which is needed to keep the economy moving.  (Literally.)  The money is good and the job is stable.  Something many people are looking for now days.

There are trucking jobs available in companies like CR England with $85,000 income for even training positions.  Truck Driving Schools enrolment has gone up during this recession and the better quality the driver, the higher demand for that candidate.  Truck Driving Jobs are available in this economy when other jobs are not.  In fact, CR England guarantees a job for every student.

How to Find Terrible Truck Driving Schools

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

You’ll find many articles on the internet and in magazines that talk about easy ways to find truck driving schools. This article provides a list of tips you should avoid and if followed they will certainly set you up for failure. We have collected these tips from various resources like the internet, commercials, and print advertisements.

We hope to show these tips in a humorous light, but finding quality CDL training is serious business so think about these before you make a decision.

Tips that will leave you broke:

  1. Start with truck driving schools that don’t disclose how much the training is going to cost.
    1. Can’t believe it can happen, plenty of stories circulate the internet about truck driving schools that get students to sign paper work before they know what they are really getting.
  2. Go with a school that negotiates the cost of tuition.
    1. If you feel like you’re getting the used car salesman pitch, just remember you are from any school that offers to charge each student a different amount.

Tips that will leave you unemployed:

  1. Get your training from a truck school that has old broken down equipment.
    1. Learning on outdated equipment or learning on uncommon equipment will set you up for failure. Very few fleet tractors are old.
  2. Choose a school that will only train students to drive automatic transmissions.
    1. Learning on equipment that is sub standard will just leave you looking for more training. Very few fleet tractors have automatic transmissions.
  3. Get training from a school that doesn’t offer a placement or job guarantee.
    1. Remember that once you have a license, you’re going to need a job. Learning from the local mom and pop trucking school might lead you right back to the unemployment lines. The catch is this time you’ll have even less money.

These tips are based on some the most common pitfalls that many truck driving school students find themselves falling victim to. If you were to avoid these common areas and consider them before you make your final decision you’ll be better off in the long run.  If you’re looking to make truck driving your new career follow this blog for more information or visit www.CREngland.com for more CDL training information.

Are You Smart Enough For Truck Driving School?

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Transport topics ran an article that asked this question, “Are You Smart Enough to Drive a Truck?” We decided we would discuss this question briefly and focus the discussion towards truck driving school .

So, Are you smart enough for truck driving school?

More and more people that are unemployed are looking at truck driving school as the starting point for a new career. The transport topics article gave great information about 3 skills that will make you a better truck driver.

Near Term Planning Ability-

“near term planning ability is the ability to reason backward from a near-term future target to select the actions to take now that will give the best chance of hitting the goal.”
Think about what your going to need for school. Think about what you will have to take care of before you leave home. You know you are going to attend a cdl training course, but plan what you need to do to reach that goal.

Non Verbal Intelligence-

“Nonverbal intelligence is the ability to absorb information visually and identify patterns in it without relying on language.”

Here, you ultimately want to pay attention and absorb things that are happening around you. We have all heard that accidents may not be caused by you but by vehicles around you. Anticipating the out come will help you when it comes to driving.

Quantitative Literacy-

“Quantitative literacy is the ability to use simple math to solve everyday problems described in short segments of text.”
This skill can help you understand and manage things like drive time, fuel consumption and trip planning. Being able to relate the numbers of the trucking business to your job duties will make you better off.

That’s it, this information came from the National Academy of Science. Their findings say that these are the most important requirements for a driver to be successful. It should also be noted that basic cognitive skills are also required.

If your about to attend a truck school, planning up to school is an excellent way to relieve yourself of a lot of stress while your training. Having unfinished business at home can serve as a distraction.

Another tip is to plan what your going to do after you finish training. CR England truck schools guarantee a job to each student that has met all the preliminary hiring requirements. Others may not so, plan who your going to apply with and where.

Stimulus For Truck Driving Schools

Friday, July 10th, 2009

The Philadelphia Business Journal ran an article about economic stimulus going towards truck driving school training. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has sent $21.5 million combined to work force investment boards in just five of Pennsylvania’s counties. According to the article the counties are already spending the stimulus money.

The stimulus act that was signed into law in February was established to help disadvantaged youth, adults and was also to be used for workers that have been uprooted. CDL driver jobs are certainly in demand any time the economy starts to expand. Now is a great time to get that kind of training.

To figure out if stimulus money is available to you we recommend you contact your local work force services location to see if they have what your looking for. They usually have all the programs down pat when comes to state and federal funding for trade programs like truck driving schools.

CR England truck driving schools offer excellent training and financing is always available. We provide transportation to our facilities and also provide dormitory housing or hotel stays at no additional charge to our training program. If it turns out you need to attend a local school  in order to qualify for stimulus funding CR England is always advertising truck driving jobs and always consider an application for employment.
